The Pemi Loop

On August 6th, 2021, I solo-hiked the Pemi Loop in New Hampshire. Pemi is short for Pemigewasset, the wilderness area this terrain covers. The loop is approximately 30 miles around, traverses eight 4,000 footers and includes over 9,000 feet of elevation gain. My goal was to hike the loop in one day.

This was my second attempt. I tried the previous year and failed, bailing around the halfway point due to an unnecessarily heavy pack and because I took a wrong turn, not realizing it until I had dropped 800 feet in elevation.

This time I hit the trail with a fraction of the pack weight and newfound determination to stay on course. I started at 2am from Lincoln Woods, hiking the loop counter-clockwise, aiming to reach the first summit while the stars were still out. It was a long day full of winding trails, ups and downs, rocks and mud, rugged terrain (some gentle too), and soaring views. At approximately 9pm that evening, I completed my goal.

55 Miles for Equal Justice

On Saturday, July 18th, 2020, I walked a 55-mile loop from Astoria, Queens to the Mario Cuomo Bridge in Tarrytown in support of the Equal Justice Initiative, an organization committed to challenging racial and economic justice and protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable.

This was a record number of miles for me to walk in a single day, a challenge further heightened by hot mid-summer temps and humidity. With the aide of a UV umbrella and a lot of water, I was able to better navigate the heat. My feet took the brunt of the beating, but after nineteen and a half hours of walking roads, bridges and trails, I made it back home.
